Description
The large, velvety leaves of the mullein plant make a soothing herbal tea. As an ingredient in salves and poultices, they have the same soothing effect on the skin. Mullein is a striking, easy to identify plant with large, densely furred leaves and a tall, stately flowering stalk. While it's native to Europe and Asia, mullein has become naturalized across North America and Asia. It can be found growing in a wide array of regions, from dry and rocky to wastelands and field edges.
- Leaves are best harvested in the first year or spring of the second year, before the flowering stalk shoots up in the summer.
- Common regional names for the plant include blanket leaf, velvet plant and velvet dock, all referring to the large, soft leaf.
- Torch plant, another common name, refers to Midieval times when the stalks were dipped in fat and lit for use as torches.
- Our organic mullein leaf's botanical name is Verbascum thapsus L.
Directions
To prepare as a tea, pour 8 oz. boiling water over 2 tsp. of herb. Cover and steep for 5-10 minutes, strain and serve immediately.

Las grandes y aterciopeladas hojas de la planta del gordolobo hacen un relajante té de hierbas. Como ingrediente en bálsamos y cataplasmas, tienen el mismo efecto calmante en la piel. El gordolobo es una planta llamativa, fácil de identificar, con hojas grandes y densamente peladas y un tallo alto y floreciente. Aunque es nativa de Europa y Asia, el gordolobo se ha naturalizado en toda América del Norte y Asia. Se puede encontrar creciendo en una amplia gama de regiones, desde las secas y rocosas hasta las tierras baldías y los bordes de los campos.
Las hojas se cosechan mejor en el primer año o en la primavera del segundo año, antes de que el tallo floral brote en verano.
Los nombres regionales comunes de la planta incluyen hoja de manta, planta de terciopelo y muelle de terciopelo, todos ellos en referencia a la hoja grande y suave.
